Photo Tips

Want to order one of our custom cards but not sure what photos will work well? Never fear lots of different types of photos will work really well and it’s so easy to take some photos yourself.

Choose High-Quality Photos

If you are lucky you might have some lovely photos already. When using existing photos, always go for the highest resolution available. Avoid images that have been compressed, like those shared on WhatsApp, as these lose detail.

If a friend took the shot, ask them to send it by email so you get the clearest version.

It can be really helpful to give us lots of options so we allow you to upload up to 5 photos and we will choose a maximum of 3 for most cards. If you have a favourite upload it as the first image.

Get the Sports Star Front and Center

The best photos are close-ups where your star is in the foreground. Backgrounds are easily removed, but we can’t edit out other people in front.

Taking Photos - Get Up Close

Most people will take photos on their smartphone and why not. They are amazing these days! If you are using your smartphone, get up close to the person - it work’s best to get lots of detail. This may feel a bit weird at first but you will see the clearer results!

Find the Right Lighting

Good lighting makes all the difference! Natural light where the sun is coming from behind you (the photographer) works best.

Overcast days are ideal—they give even, non-blinding light that keeps your star comfortable and well-lit.

Dress the Part

Get out props, uniforms, or sports gear as it will make the photo feel even more authentic. Ask them to wear their game-day attire and bring along any equipment they would usually use.

Capture the Action

Have them strike a classic pose or mimic an action from their sport. Snap lots of photos—action shots look dynamic and make great trading cards!

If your device has a burst mode, use it to capture multiple images in seconds, so you can choose the best.

Also having a lovely headshot where they are holding a piece of equipment ie a ball, medal, helmet, bat etc. can be great as the middle photo on a card.

Keep It Fun and Natural

When you are taking the photos try and keep it as light and fun as possible - put on some music or have another person for them to play with. The more relaxed it is, the better the final shots!

If you want to keep the cards a surprise maybe have a reason on hand for why you are taking them. For example you might be sending them to a friend or relative.
